Relays for Access Control: Advanced Management of Doors and Gates
Relays for access control are fundamental devices for managing automated doors, gates, and entry points. These electromechanical components allow circuits to be activated or deactivated based on signals received from the control system. In LabKey products, relays are used to ensure secure, automated, and highly configurable access.
What are Relays?
Relays are electrically controller that allow circuits to be opened or closed. There are two main categories of relays:
- Electromechanical Relays (EMR): Use a magnetic coil to activate the contact.
- Solid-State Relays (SSR): Based on electronic technology, they offer higher switching speed and longer lifespan.
In access control systems, relays are activated by an external input (e.g., an RFID badge, PIN code, or remote command) to unlock a door or activate a connected device.
Relays in LabKey Access Control Systems
LabKey products use relays to manage access securely and customize it according to the user’s needs. LabKey controllers, such as the Pro with 2 relays, allow simultaneous control of multiple entry points, setting specific access rules for each entry.
Power Supply
The controller requires a 12V/1A power supply, which is provided. Every command device, except the LabKey Mini Radio Keypad, is powered directly from the controller via an RS485 cable connection.
Connection
Connect the gate or electronic device you want to activate to the controller’s terminal. Each controller has 2 or 4 relays, depending on the model chosen:
- 2-relay controller can manage up to 2 gates and connect a maximum of 4 command devices.
- 4-relay controller can manage up to 4 gates and connect a maximum of 8 command devices.
The contact used is N/O (normally open), with a maximum capacity of 10A/250V.
Benefits of Using Relays for Access Control
- Increased security: ensure reliable and protected access management.
- Clean contacts: allow secure connection to any electronic device or external system, such as alarms, utilities, or locks, without the risk of power fluctuations.
- Versatility: can control not only doors and gates but also lights and alarm systems.
- Integration with various devices: compatible with RFID badges, keypads, and remote control systems.
- Customization: allow you to set different access logic based on user needs.
Conclusion
Relays for access control are essential components in entry management systems. Thanks to LabKey products, advanced relays can be used to configure secure and personalized access, ensuring total control over the access to buildings, businesses, and sensitive facilities.
